The Occupational Nurse is responsible for setting policy, developing, interpreting and administering occupational health services consistent with organizational goals and objectives.

 

The Key Functions:

  • Provides occupational health surveillance testing including pulmonary function, audiometric testing, vision screening, EKG and other tests as appropriate. 
  • Provides initial assessment of on-the-job injuries and illnesses and refers for further evaluation as necessary. 
  • Provides direct care, including treatment of occupational injuries and illnesses using protocols. 
  • Coordinates/provides for the appropriate care, treatment, and follow-up of work-related health events based on knowledge of the specific work environment. 
  • Assesses non-occupational illness occurring at work, determines need for immediacy of treatment and gives guidance to seek care from personal health care providers. 
  • Coordinates/provides support for emergency response teams including training, scheduling and supplies. 
  • Performs health screenings and health assessment and assists with follow-up procedures. 
  • Maintains and safe guards confidentiality of employee health information and health records. 
  • Leads the implementation of health promotion strategies including group and individual health education activities. 
  • Assists in case management initiation and follow-up. 
  • Assumes responsibility for professional development and education.   
  • Assists supervisors and employees with return-to-work issues including modified scheduling and job accommodations. 
  • Leads Site Wellness Committee and trains Wellness Committee personnel to assist with health promotion programs.
  • Assists with mill-wide safety and industrial hygiene tasks.
Qualifications
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina or qualified to be registered in North Carolina. 
  • 3 or more years experience in nursing practice.
  • BS in Nursing and certification in Occupational Health preferred
  • Experience in occupational health and case management preferred.
  • Ability to make independent nursing judgments.
  • Current knowledge of law and regulations governing worker and worksite safety and health (i.e., OSHA, Worker's Compensation, Americans with Disabilities Act, Family Medical Leave Act, HIPPA.)
  • Additional certifications in pulmonary function testing, hearing conservation and basic life support preferred.
  • Ability to organize work and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly in verbal and written form.
